The Anima Co Mentoring Program

The Anima Co Mentoring Program is a structured, longer-term program built around the mentoring relationship.

Mentees have the opportunity to learn from someone with experience, talk through real workplace challenges, ask questions, test ideas and get another perspective. Mentors have the opportunity to support someone else’s development while also reflecting on their own experience, developing their mentoring skills and learning from their mentee.

We consistently hear from mentors about how much they get from being part of the program. It isn’t simply an opportunity to give something back. It provides a valuable opportunity to reflect, learn and develop too.

Around the mentoring relationship, we build a structured program of learning, practice, reflection and peer connection. This gives participants more opportunities to develop the skills they are learning, practise them in a safe environment, apply them in the workplace and learn from their experiences.

Our approach is built around: Learn → Reflect → Practise → Apply → Embed

These components work together throughout the mentoring experience.

Learn

Participants take part in practical training focused on key leadership and interpersonal skills. Topics can include confidence, courage, self-awareness, emotional regulation, connection, empathy, accountability and trust, feedback and difficult conversations. We take a flexible approach to every program, adjusting and tailoring the training to meet the needs of each cohort.

Reflect

Reflection is built throughout the program. Participants have opportunities to think about their own experiences, behaviours and challenges and consider what they might do differently.

The mentoring relationship provides an important space for this. Participants can talk things through with their mentor, ask questions and get another perspective.

Monthly check-ins also provide opportunities to reflect with peers, share experiences and learn from others.

Practise

Knowing what to do doesn’t necessarily mean feeling confident enough to do it. Participants therefore have opportunities to practise new skills in a safe and supportive environment. They can work through scenarios, practise conversations, test different approaches and receive feedback.

Practice helps turn knowledge into something people can actually use. And it has benefits not just for the mentoring program, but for people’s workplaces and their everyday life.

Apply

Participants are encouraged to take what they are learning into their work. That might mean approaching a conversation differently, asking a better question, trying a new leadership behaviour or using a different approach to a problem.

They can then bring those experiences back to their mentor and peer group. What happened? What worked? What didn’t? What would they do differently next time?

This creates a practical cycle of learning and application.

Embed

The program runs over an extended period because meaningful development takes time. Participants have repeated opportunities to learn, practise, apply and reflect. Over time, new skills and approaches can become part of how they work rather than something they learned during a program.

The longer-term nature of the program (6 or 12 months) also allows mentoring relationships and peer connections to develop.

Participants build relationships with people outside their immediate workplace, share knowledge and experience, and create connections that can lead to collaboration, partnerships and ongoing professional networks.

The program supports participants to develop:

  • practical leadership and interpersonal skills
  • confidence and self-awareness
  • communication and relationship skills
  • experience applying new approaches
  • stronger mentoring and coaching capability
  • broader professional networks
  • relationships that can support future collaboration

For organisations, the program also creates opportunities to build connections across teams and sectors, share knowledge and experience, and strengthen leadership and workforce capability.
