About our speaker

Dr. Mark Brennan is the UNESCO Chair on Global Citizenship Education for Sustainable Peace and Professor of Leadership and Community Development at the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Brennan’s teaching, research, writing, and program development concentrate on the role of community, engagement across the lifespan, and social-emotional competencies in the pursuit of peaceful, civil societies. Dr. Brennan has over 35 years of experience in designing, conducting, and analysing social science research related to community, youth and citizen engagement. His work has taken place in 46 countries.

He was a Fulbright Specialist in 2012 and a Fulbright Scholar in 2021-22 and is co-founder of the Global Network of UNESCO Chairs on Children, Youth, and Community. Dr Brennan is the 2019 recipient of the Milton Eisenhower Teaching Excellence Award, and 2014 W. LaMarr Kopp International Achievement award recipient, Penn State’s highest awards for teaching and international work, respectively.

All of Dr. Brennan’s research outputs have been translated into teaching, outreach curriculum, and policy formation to facilitate the transfer of knowledge to a wider international audience. His work has been published in over 250 peer reviewed journal articles, books, book chapters, UN policy papers and Outreach publications. His recent books include Theory, Practice, and Community Development (2013), Community Leadership Development: A Compendium of Theory, Research, and Application (2013), Culture, Community and Development (2021), and Creating Caring Communities to Overcome Times of Crisis (2022).
