“Tom is Brilliant!”, “What a wonderful session”, and “Another gem brought to the Territory!”
These are just a few snippets of feedback I received after the session on ‘Seven Secrets of a Healthy Mind’ with Dr Tom Nehmy.
Tom is a brilliant and engaging presenter who captivated us with his knowledge, experience, and stories. As a previous clinical psychologist who later moved into research to pursue his passion for prevention, Tom is all about getting the messages out to help people learn strategies to build resilience, healthy habits, and overall wellbeing.
So, what are the secrets?
Well, as Tom says, they aren’t actually ‘secrets’, but good practices we can all learn and use. I’ll share a little of what we discussed with you…
It’s best to use mistakes as an opportunity to learn (rather than punishing ourselves or avoiding mistakes altogether).
We each have several physical triggers that we can use to remind us to take care of ourselves (it might present as headaches, sleeplessness, irritability, etc.), and commit to actions that cultivate wellness (such as exercising, going to the beach, catching up with friends, going to bed early, etc.).
It is also important to recognise any unhealthy thought processes we might fall into (such as catastrophizing, jumping to conclusions, using ‘should’ statements, and focusing on negatives).
