First Nations Board internships

A partnership between Anima Co. and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the First Nations Board Intern Program provides First Nations people with the opportunity to develop the skills, confidence and experience needed to contribute to Boards and committees across northern Australia.

Each year, the program supports emerging leaders from government, industry and Indigenous organisations to participate in real governance environments, learn from experienced Board members, and build practical capability in strategic decision making. The aim is to increase the number of trained and experienced First Nations representatives available to serve in governance roles now and into the future.

The program is designed to build capability, confidence and connections that support long-term career and leadership development. By supporting more First Nations people to step into leadership roles, this program helps create Boards and committees that are reflective of the communities and industries they serve. Through shared learning and diverse participation, we are working toward a more inclusive, resilient and effective governance landscape for northern Australia.

Last year, we had 10 First Nations interns join the program. At the end of the program, 5 of these individuals had already been offered places on boards and committees, indicating the value of this program. This year, we have 12 interns on the program, who we will support to find board and committee placements at the conclusion.
