Caring for Country Music Competition
The Caring for Country Music Competition is an initiative under the Northern Australia Biosecurity Strategy (NABS) that aims to engage northern communities in biosecurity awareness through the power of music and creative expression. It has been created in partnership with the NT Department of Agriculture and the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
The competition invites individuals, schools, and community groups across northern Australia to create and perform original songs under the theme ‘Caring for Our Country’, a broad and inclusive concept designed to spark creativity, storytelling, and pride in the shared responsibility of protecting land, water, and environment from biosecurity threats.
The Caring for Country Music Competition connects communities with biosecurity through music, turning important messages about pests, weeds, and diseases into creative, culturally relevant stories. It supports local artists, encourages public awareness and reporting, and fosters collaboration between biosecurity agencies, schools, Indigenous ranger groups, and music networks like MusicNT and the NT Music Rangers.
The other fantastic thing about the music competition is that when we asked entrants to indicate whether they had learned anything about biosecurity through the competition, 86% of entrants indicated that their knowledge had increased!
